Smolensk air crash

The black box

The black box and audio recording from the cockpit were retrieved and analyzed. According to topography of the area around the airport the landing strip was set in the middle of the forest and the ground around the strip was slightly lower than the surface of the strip. This was important if the pilots were using the radio altimeter (showing the altitude to ground surface) and not the barometric pressure (that would show the absolute altitude). When the ground started to raise towards the strip the pilots might have been assuming that the altimeter was wrong and they still are on the right approach line.

The audio recording from the cockpit was even more interesting - since the plane reached altitude of 200 meters (600 feet) the warnings started to signal "pull up", but there was no reaction from pilots. The navigator was still calmly reading the altitude: 100 meters, 70 meters, 50 meters. When the pilots said that they will make another approach they were way too low for the plane to avoid the trees.
