The crash
The party including president Lech Kaczynski, his wife and other officials, was flying to Smolensk on board of Russian-built Tupolev Tu-154 airplane that was one of the official government jets. They were flying there mostly because Kaczynski was trying to avoid meeting Russian president Vladimir Putin, who was present in Smolensk the previous day.
The flight was doing well until reaching the Smolensk airport. The airport and nearby area was covered in dense fog. Since the airport didn’t offered the modern support for landing by instrument the tower gave the pilots permission to make the decision on their own if they are able to land themselves.
The only limit the Russians gave the pilots was minimum altitude of 100 meters (300 feet) - if at that level they still could not see the airport clearly they should abort the landing and flight to the reserve location. But the plane kept decreasing even below the level of 100 meters until hitting a tree with left wing. This caused the plane to crash to the ground. There were no survivors.
