Troubled teenager Donnie Darko wakes up on October 2, 1988 and spots strange figure in rabbit costume, who introduces to him as Frank and tells him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. At dawn he returns home and finds that a jet engine has crashed in his family house and completely destroyed his room. FAA is buffled where the engine came from, while Donnie keeps being visited by Frank. Under his influence he begins to behave differently - he vandalizes his school, he begins to date new student Getchen and rebel against the school. He tells his psychotherapist Dr. Thurman about Frank and his visits, but she assumes they are his daylight hallucinations. She contacts his parents worried that Donnie begins to show symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. At the same time Donnie begins to behave even stranger - he talks with one of his teachers about time travel, he breaks the speach given by motivational speaker Jim Cunningham and later burns down Cunningham’s house on Frank’s order, later under hypnosis he confesses to all his crimes to Dr. Thurman and says that soon Frank will kill someone.
Donnie Darko is unusual movie and at first glance might be a little bit confusing, but the while the story goes on all the elements begin to fall into right places and the end is rewarding enough for the chaotic beginning. By many people it is considered a classic and multi-layer history that can be watched over and over again, but to be honest it is a bit much. It is good movie, but there were better in history.
