Somerset, a veteran police detective, who is about to retire, and his new partner Mills, are starting their cooperation from a high note - they are given a case that involves quite a gruesome murder. The body of an obese man was found in his house, bound and literally fed to death by an unknown assailant. Since it must have taken at least a few days and a lot of effort to kill someone this way, the detectives suspect it was the work of a sadistic killer. Also, they found a word "gluttony" left on the wall, which pushed their investigation into a new direction - a sadistic killer with possible religious obsession. Somerset is reluctant to pursue the case - it looks like a long-term investigation and possible multiple victims, and he feels that there is no way he could solve it before his retirement. Soon after, another body is found, and the superiors push Somerset to continue the work at least until Mills is ready to take over.

Classic crime movie, one of the best of its kind with a great plot, great cast and unique atmosphere - a must-see! Of course, a veteran police detective just before the retirement is a cliché, but in wider perspective it somehow works with Morgan Freeman playing this character and the overall undertone of the story.
