Lake Bodom murders

Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson

In 2004, about 44 years since murders, Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson, the sole survivor of the attack, was put on trial when more modern technology was used to re-test the evidence. This was quite a surprise, especially so long since the crime was committed. What was the evidence that lead to this? The shoes...

The one thing that was quite odd on the crimes scene, was that Nils Gustafsson was not wearing any shoes when he was found. The shoes were later found hidden about 500 meters away with blood stains on them. The new technology available in 2004 was able to determine that blood on those shoes belonged to all three victims of the murder, but there was no sign of Gustafsson’s blood on them. This lead police to conclusion that he was wearing them at the time of the attack, so he might have been the victim or... the killer.

But there was another factor, one that was hovering over Gustafsson from day one - he had amnesia and did not knew what exactly happened, he and Boisman were heavily drinking (according to diary of one of the victims), he was the only one who survived, he was the only one that was not stabbed. What is more the victim with most injuries (some of them caused after her death) was his girlfriend Maila Björklund, she was partly undressed, which points towards possible sexual nature of the crime and personal dimension of the crime (hence the overkill).

Gustafsson himself, just like Björklund, was found on top of the collapsed tent, which added a new layer to suspicions. If they both were inside of the tent when attacked, the killer could have dragged the girl to undress and stab her (the overkill), but why then he would drag Gustafsson from the tent? He was the only one that survived, he had the lightest injuries, so why would he be placed on top of the tent? Why would killer take his shoes before attack and them hid them 500 meters away? He took other items and they were never found, so why the shoes were left in the woods?

In 2005 Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson was acquitted of all charges, the judge explained that the verdict was due to inconclusive nature of the evidence and failure of prosecution to present motive for Gustafsson to kill the others.
