The crime scene
The police did not secure the area surrounding crime scene, which lead to evidence being destroyed. To make things worse soldiers were brought to help search the area, which lead to discovery of some evidence, but it is hard to determine how many evidence were destroyed at the same time (footprints, blood stains, potential pieces of cloth).
The initial investigation showed that at least two of the victims were attacked not from inside the tent, but from outside. The blunt object used in attack was assumed to be a rock, while stab wounds were done through the material of the tent. But when it comes to the other couple, Björklund and Gustafsson, they were found lying on top of the collapsed tent material, which leaves open to debate were they attacked while they were still inside the tent or were they outside. The initial investigation concluded that all four victims were inside the tent.
Björklund was stabbed 15 times and bottom half of her body was undressed. Some (if not most) of the wounds were delivered after her death. Compared to other victims she was particular target of the killer. Gustafsson on the other hand, even though he was found on top of the tent survived and had no stab wounds. He was severely injured around the face and back of the head, although the description of his injuries vary between different sources. That discrepancy in their wounds lead to one of the most surprising twists in this case - pressing charges against Gustafsson for the murders.
