Mary Celeste

Premature abandonment

The theory of premature abandonment of the ship is often called the most reasonable - if captain Briggs was convinced that the ship would go down soon and order the crew to abandon the ship, later to discover the ship sail on without crew on board.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • the things that were taken from Mary Celeste would suggest the abandonment (maps, chronometer, sextant),
  • no signs of violence which suggest that the crew left the ship on their own will,
  • crew left their belongings behind, which suggest they had to leave in a hurry,
  • if there was water between decks and one of the two pumps onboard wasn’t working this could have pushed captain Briggs to decision that he is in bigger trouble than he really was and abandonment is the only option.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • crew leaving their belongings if they weren’t in such hurry that they had time to pick up all the objects they needed to survive on the lifeboat,
  • captain leaving behind his logbook while he took all other papers.
