Cash on Demand 1961 British mystery thriller review
Two days before Christmas, Harry Fordyce, the manager of local bank branch, starts just another day in his job. He starts it by reprimanding his assistant, Pearson, for allowing one of the clients to overdraft in the account. Due to unforgiving nature of Fordyce the situation escalates to the point that he threatens to sack Pearson, which would make him ineligible to be hired in the banking industry. At the last moment, he postpones the final decision, but the situation is tense. Few minutes after the bank opens, a gentleman requires a meeting with the manager. Pearson knows it is not a great moment, but asks Fordyce if he will see the client. The manager reluctantly agrees and the guest introduces to him as Colonel Gore Hepburn, an employee of insurance company. And not just any insurance company, the one that insures the money stored in every branch of that bank. Colonel wants to make an inspection of the security in the bank and from a get-go criticizes Pearson for allowing an outsider into the manager office. But when Fordyce and Hepburn are left alone, his story slightly changes and the whole life of Harry Fordyce will change radically.
British crime thriller, starring Peter Cushing (most widely known for playing the famous detective Sherlock Holmes), set in a small branch of a bank, with just two people on the screen most of the time, has enough tension for couple of movies. It is very much in the style set by Alfred Hitchcock films, where an average person is put in less-than-average situation. A surprising gem of British mystery movies.
