The Keeper of Lost Causes 2013 Danish mystery thriller review

While on stakeout, police detective Carl Morck decides to take a chance and enter the suspect’s house without waiting for the backup. This one moment changes everything - his partner is shot and Morck has to take the heat for his poor judgement in this situation. However, he is not sacked, but instead sent to the archive section, which might be seen as a more severe punishment. The job in the archive is not seen as a "real police work" - it is basically tedious reviewing of the cold cases and trying to check if the original investigator did not overlook some clues or leads. As it turns out, the whole archive section is actually only one person, Assad, which shows how unimportant the role is in the eyes of the superiors. Morck finds it hard to cooperate with Assad, but even harder the reality of his new position - the whole job is to get through 2–3 files a day and put them back on the shelf. For Morck it is unbearable to go on like this, but then he finds among the cold cases the file about the disappearance of Merete Lynggaard, a successful politician, that vanished10 years ago while travelling onboard of a ferry full of passengers. Against the demands of his superiors, Morck re-opens the case and reviews all the evidence. He doesn’t yet realize that Merete is actually alive and kept in captivity.

A Danish bestseller, by Mikkel Norgaard, turned into an intriguing film which concentrates on the less fascinating part of the police work - the boring job in the archives, where you basically go through files. Well-developed characters, an interesting plot and the mystery that will haunt you.
