Isdal Woman

Elaborate suicide theory

Police investigation was closed with conclusion that Isdal Woman committed suicide and from that point it can be extended that all that happened before was just a part of elaborate suicide.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • the men she met in hotels could be, in a way, part of the problem that lead her towards suicide,
  • she placed some of her belongings (like jewelry) near body before she killed herself, like it was some sort of ornament,
  • her movements close to Penguin missiles trials areas could have been accidental,
  • her conversation with naval officer (if took place), could have been personal and had nothing to do with Penguin missiles,
  • removal of labels from clothes suggest elaborate suicide,
  • changing appearance, hotels, rooms and identities sounds like someone with paranoia, which could lead to suicide,

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • from her notes and hotel forms it is clear that she traveled for months, which seems like extremely elaborate suicide plan,
  • changing of appearance would be pointless if the ultimate goal was just suicide,
  • she had resources to travel for months without any destination just to kill herself in Bergen seems far-fetched, although not impossible,
  • her movements close to the Penguin missiles trials areas could have been accidental, but conversation with naval officer would undermine that argument, because it looks like logical pattern,
  • changing hotels and rooms does not look like a person that does not want to live, it looks like person that has (at least of surface) still grasp with reality and tries to avoid some sort of danger,
  • changing appearance, hotels, rooms and identities sounds like someone with paranoia, which could lead to suicide, but at the same time elaborate suicide requires long-term planning and cold calculation, which does not sound like effect of paranoia,
  • no one came forward to identify Isdal Woman, which means she was an extremely lonely person that no one knew (which is almost impossible), in that case building a very complex way to commit suicide would be pointless, since no one knew her in the first place (if she would killed herself in a manner she did, without all the hotel changes, etc. she still would be hard to identify),

Even though this theory is far-fetched, mostly due to amount of time and money she would spend on pointless travels that do not make this mystery any better, fake passports and changing her appearance, it is still a bit more likely than other theories that we have. It does look like she might have committed suicide, but at the same time her activity before death suggest she was not depressed (none of hotel staff that had contact with her noticed any such symptoms), so it is not a theory with solid basis.
