The Amityville hoax

The events that took place in the 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville were used as a base for the book "The Amityville Horror: A True Story" by Jay Anson in 1977. Since the book was promoted based on popularity of movie "The Exorcist" that was very popular at the time the doubts aroused around the whole story. People started to ask questions about the story, especially since it was presented as true story. Both George and Kathy Lutz were denying that it was all their imagination or a hoax, but some of the facts presented in the book were later proved to be false (f.e. footsteps of pig-like creature in the snow on January 1, when there was no snow on that day).

Also Cromarty family that bought the house in 1977 claimed that the red room in the basement that was described in the book as concealed was in fact just a typical closet. The damages to the doors and windows described in the book never took place - all the doors, locks and windows were original and had no marks of any damages.

All of this leads to the inevitable conclusion that the story was most probably made up. Even if Lutz family did stumble upon some strange phenomena around the house it looks like the story presented in the book was enriched by the imagination of Jay Anson.

Also, Ronald DeFeo had a really bad relationship with his father, so that's why he wanted to kill him, but no one knows his motive for killing the rest of his family.
