The Somerton Man

Somerton Man identified?

The DNA tests conducted in 2022 on hair samples removed from the death mask of Somerton Man lead to a young man, who might be a relative of the Somerton Man and through reconstruction of genealogy tree the Adelaide University professor Derek Abbott claimed to find the identity of Somerton Man.

According to Derek Abbott the Somerton Man was Carl "Charles" Webb, an electrical engineer and instrument maker from Melbourne. Born on 16th November 1905 in Footscray part of Melbourne, disappeared in April 1947 after leaving his wife.

So far there is no official confirmation of those findings, but if Somerton man was finally identified this is only one piece of a puzzle. Since Webb was Australian, had wife and family, how was he never identified before, since there was national-wide media coverage of that case, not to mention why his wife would not identify him.

However one element suggests that the researchers might be on the right track - the great-great-grandfather of the young man found through DNA tests was Thomas Keane and Somerton Man was wearing clothes marked T. Keane. This, on the other hand brings another question - why police did not found Thomas Keane back in 1940s. Thomas Keane was married to sister of Carl Webb, which means that if Webb was in fact Somerton Man, there were two more people that should have been able to identify him back in 1940s...
