Hwaseong serial killer

The killings

The killings in the area of Hwaseong City started on 15 September 1986 when among the rice fields a body of a young woman was found. She was bound with her own clothing, raped and strangled. When soon after another woman killed in a same way was found nearby the police realized that they have a serial killer operating in their area. It was first such case in history of South Korea and police wasn’t prepared for facing such complicated investigation.

Overall 10 bodies of women were found in over 4 years, age of the victims ranging from 14 to 71. All of them were gagged, raped and all except one murdered, usually using parts of their own clothing. Huge investigation involving over 2 million police officers led to checking over 20,000 suspects, 40,000 individuals have had their fingerprint taken, 570 DNA samples and 180 hair samples were analyzed, but all of it produced very little clues. The forensic analysis gave the blood type of the assailant as B, but there was no technology in late 1980s Korea to make a DNA analysis.

After the ninth murder samples of blood were sent for analysis to Japan, but they didn’t match any of the suspects. Investigation provided only the very basic description of the murderer provided by the only victim that survived the attack - he was young man in his twenties, weighing about 75 kilograms, 165 to 170 centimetres tall and slender.

The last murder took place around 9:00 p.m. on 3rd April 1991. A 69-year-old woman was discovered dead, raped and strangled with pantihose on a mountain in Hwaseong. Up to this day the crimes are still unsolved.

In South Korea such crimes can be penalised only for 15 years, and since 15 years have already passed even though National Institute for Science Investigation is still holding the DNA samples gathered at the crime scenes no one will ever be convicted for those crimes (at least if the law of 15 years span will not be changed).
