Kidnapping of Lindbergh baby

The kidnapping

 - The kidnapping

The kidnapping of Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr, son of famous American aviator Charles Lindbergh, took place on March 1, 1932. At the time of the kidnapping the baby was only 20-months-old. Charles Lindbergh Jr was taken from his crib in family home in East Amwell, New Jersey some time after 8 PM. About 9:30 PM Charles Lindbergh Sr heard some sort of noise that reminded him a wooden crate breaking and falling down. The family nurse, Betty Gow, went back to baby’s bedroom around 10 PM and discovered that the baby was gone. First she checked if the baby was with her mother, who was just having a bath, later she went to library (directly below baby’s bedroom) and asked Lindbergh Sr if he took the baby. They both went upstairs and found the white envelope on the window sill above the radiator. Lindbergh Sr took his gun and went around the house looking for any sign of intruders. In about 30 minutes the local police arrived, together with some reporters and the family lawyer. Near the house a tire print was found in the mud, two sets of footprints and three pieces of wooden ladder in the bushes (one of which was broken).
