Kidnapping of Lindbergh baby

Was Bruno Hauptmann innocent?

Just like in case of many other famous trials that took place in United States where heavy media coverage was present investigation and Hauptmann’s trial was in many points a farce. There are still doubts if he was involved in any way in the crime and if so what was his role. That’s why many people believe that Bruno Richard Hauptmann was in fact innocent.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • he had an alibi for the night of kidnapping - his foreman told police that he was present on the job in Manhattan, but during the trial withdrew that statement and the time-sheets, that could confirm the alibi, surprisingly disappeared,
  • he was skilled carpenter and still the ladder used during the kidnapping was poor quality and in fact collapsed under the kidnapper,
  • there were two sets of footprint leading from the house and also the ladder used was too short and too wobbly that one person could use it safely,
  • on trial police proved that wood used to produce the ladder was removed from floor of Hauptmann’s attic, which makes no sense since he had garage full of wooden planks that could not be traced back to him,
  • Lindbergh, who accompanied Jafsie during the delivery of ransom, testified that he heard someone calling "Hey doctor" with German accent (and recognized that it was Hauptmann), but in previous statements he mentioned words "Hey doc" and said nothing about any accent,
  • there were two sets of footprints leading from the house (although later the policemen changed their mind and mentioned seeing only one) and police did investigate into gang of kidnappers, yet Hauptmann was never linked to any accomplices,
  • he was in possession of the ransom money, but also during the trial and even after the execution the gold certificates were turning up in different parts of United States,
  • his handwriting was proved by the police to be identical with ransom letters, but in fact Hauptmann did not have problems with spelling English words like the author of the letters,
  • his handwriting was confirmed when he was forced to write the letter in same manner and with all spelling errors that were present in the original notes,
  • the handwriting experts were convinced that author of the notes was using German language as native (basing on the nature of the errors in spelling) and since Hauptmann had no problems with spelling it would make no sense for him to pretend to have such problems - the police could not narrow the suspects to just one minority,
  • if Hauptmann would make spelling errors on purpose it would make no sense to make them seem like a simple German immigrant would make them - using errors that would suggest f.e. Italian language would put him out of the suspicion,
  • kidnappers had thorough knowledge of Lindbergh family, thus it was from the start investigated as "inside job", yet it was never proved that Hauptmann were anywhere near the house in New Jersey,
  • the attorney that was defending Hauptmann was a great fan of Lindbergh Sr, which puts his professional loyalty towards the client under suspicion,
  • it was never proved that the story involving Isidor Fisch and the box full of money was false.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • he was in possession of money from the ransom, yet it was only small part of the random money (14 out of 50 thousands),
  • Jafsie did recognized Hauptmann as "Cemetary John" although refused to identify him in police line-up,
  • his handwriting was reported as identical with the one on ransom letters,
  • the address and phone number of Jafsie were present on the door of his wardrobe,
  • the person that contacted Jaffie and wrote the ransom letters was most probably German (like Hauptmann), but on the other hand there was part of New York at the time filled with immigrants from Germany or Austria.
