Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting

On June 24th 1947 private pilot Kenneth Arnold spotted a string of nine, shiny unidentified flying objects flying past Mount Rainier in Washington. Arnold’s description of the objects he saw was the first report that started the press to use the term "flying saucers" or "flying discs" to describe UFOs.

Arnold saw few bright flashes next to his plane and with simple tests ruled out the possibility that they were just reflections on his windows. He even considered that the objects could have been a flock of geese, but since he was on the altitude of 9200 feet (2800 meters) and the birds would have to fly with great speed he ruled that out too.

When the objects were moving along and in front of his plane Arnold took a good look at them and later described them as saucer-like or like half moon. He took the course parallel to the objects and started observe them through open side window, which means he sight was not obscured by anything. He compared the size of the objects to be similar to DC-4 airplane and timed their flight between two mountains before he lost the sight of them. His estimation of their speed was about 1200 mph (1900 kph).
