Westall UFO incident

The incident took place on 6th April 1966 in Melbourne, Australia around 11.00 AM. For about 20 minutes unknown flying object was hovering couple feet over the grass field near the Westall High School. The object was observed by few of the students and described as being a grey saucer-shaped craft with a slight purple glow and size larger than a car. Soon other students (and some of the teachers) run out of the school and watched the strange object from beyond the fence making it together over 200 eyewitnesses. According to them the object was descending and then crossed and overflew the high school’s south-west corner, going in a south-east direction, before disappearing from sight as it descended behind a stand of trees in front of the Westall State School. After about 20 minutes the object climbed at great speed and departed towards the north-west. As the object gained altitude some accounts describe it as having been pursued from the scene by five unidentified aircraft which circled the object.

One of the students crossed the fence and came within the arm reach distance to the object and as he approached it he said that he felt warm coming from it and that the purple glow was getting much more intensive. He was about to touch the object, but hesitated and moved back instead. Soon the object took off. Few days later the local media begun to ran the story, but most of them took the easy approach calling the object a balloon or weather balloon. The Weather Bureau did released a balloon at Laverton at 8:30 AM and the westerly wind blowing at the time could have moved it into the area where the sighting was reported, however the balloons usually tend to travel with the wind and not hovering over the field. Also weather balloons are rather round and this object was saucer-shaped.

Although some witnesses reported five Cessna-type aircraft around the object, investigators were unable to find any record of such aircraft. Any official sources decline that there was any air traffic in the area at that time. The number of eyewitnesses (children and teachers) and the unusual behaviour of the object (descending in controlled manner, hovering in the same spot for 20 minutes and then taking off with high speed) makes it a very interesting incident.
