Inspector Frederick Abberline has to climb out of the depths of his opium addiction to solve the series of murders in Whitechapel. And this time he is gonna need of all his senses, or what is left of them, to catch the infamous killer, who became the synonym of a serial killer. On the first crime scene, he finds a grape stems, which pushes his investigation into a new direction. A poor prostitute could not afford such fruits, so someone must have used it to lure her, perhaps into his carriage.
The American version of Jack the Ripper story is, as could be expected, done without any care about the details and historical facts. Actually, it is based on a comic book about Jack the Ripper, which could explain why it was made with so little accuracy and a lot of fancy facades and not much substance - we see here more of the legends and myths surrounding the murders, rather than the real events and actual investigation. Also, the characters of Frederick Abberline and other policemen are taken straight from the imagination of comic book creators and not from history.
Overall - good cast, decent script and none of historical value whatsoever. It is about Jack the Ripper, it has some good atmosphere, but like many other works of fiction, it lacks depth.
