Original title: Polska mierę
mysterious eventsserial killer
Running time: 80 minutes
Language: Polish
Osso is academic worker at a library and also works on his thesis about death themes in medieval literature. He is underpaid, his academic work is pointless, he lives a sad life in shabby house filled with nosy neighbours that are using his good nature to solve their own problems. In the meantime police finds another victim of a serial killer, again hoe was the weapon used by the mysterious murderer. The detectives are shocked with the brutality and primitive weapon used, so far they have no clues to who and why is killing people. Osso is visited by Marta, girl he used to know in the past, she also is academic worker and is frustrated with her life. They spend the night together and Osso hopes they could renew their relationship, but Marta often disappears without any explanation and later comes back as if nothing happened. When they meet in a restaurant they have a row and Marta leaves. Next day a body of one of the restaurant guests is found nearby - he was killed using a hoe. Osso becomes one of the suspects for the police, but while he is put under surveillance he begins to notice that Marta disappearances are always close to the times of murders.
Polish film that is hard to categorize - it is crime drama mixed with mystic elements, look at the effects of the political transformation of Poland in 1980s and also a psychological drama with elements of satire. And, as it can be expected, the final effect is a mess - we have here brilliantly created dark and gloomy atmosphere, we have interesting plot involving police investigationa and all of it leads to... pretty much nowhere. Great atmoshpere, good premise that turns into a rather disappointing mystery movie that is worth to see for the atmosphere.
