Rita Gorgonova case

Murder of Elzbieta Zaremba

On the night of 30 December 1931 in a residence of 41-year-old architect Henryk Zaremba loud howl of the dog woke up 14-year-old Stanislaw Zaremba, son of Henryk. When he went to check what happened he found his 17-year-old sister Elzbieta (Elizabeth) dead in her bed. He alarmed rest of the residents. They brought down doctor, who lived nearby. Elzbieta was killed by the blows to the head, most probably done by blunt object. The small pickaxe that might have been the murder weapon was found dumped into the pond in the back of the house when the police arrived.

Beside the victim there were only 3 people in the house: her father Henryk, her brother Stas, Rita Gorgonova and young daughter of Henryk and Rita. The gardner and his teenage helper lived nearby, but in a house outside the residence. On the spot Rita Gorgonova became the main suspect, especially since Elzbieta and Rita mutually hated each other. But since the girl was deflowered the gardener helper was under suspicion or an unknown male killer that was after Elzbieta’s body. Even her father, Henryk Zaremba, was arrested as a suspect.
