Police is investigating strange suicide case - a man has jumped out of one of the top floors in office building in Philadelphia. While checking the details Detective Bowden, assigned to that case, learns about another emergency in the building - five people are stuck in the elevator between floors and the maintenance workers can’t get through to them. They can be seen by CCTV installed inside the lift, they can hear the voice of security guard over the speakers, but they can’t answer him since the microphone meant for alarm contact is broken. Situation drastically changes when lights begin to flicker and the security guard spots something strange on the CCTV monitor. What seemed to be every day situation turns into drama when one of the people inside the elevator, an older lady, suddenly dies in mysterious circumstance. While trying to reach the elevator Detective Bowden begins to unveil the bits of mystery and reasons why the seemingly random five people ended up in the stuck lift.
Film based on story by M. Night Shyamalan is built in interesting way and keeps the mystery until the very end. Well, at least in theory - in practice the title of the movie spoils half of the mystery and what is left isn’t as good as it might have been if the narration would have been done in different way. Nevertheless the story is involving, the atmosphere is dense and overall it still is quite entertaining mystery movie (especially comparing to other M. Night Shyamalan productions like Signs, Lady in the Water or The Happening).
