One of the first theories about the disappearance was that the plane might have been hit by bombs dropped from British bombers that were coming back from aborted mission over Europe. It was a standard procedure that bombers would not try to land while filled with bombs, so if their mission was aborted they would drop their bombs while flying over the English Channel.
On December 15 there was such aborted mission on Siegen in Germany. Royal Air Force 138 Lancaster bombers, short on fuel, jettisoned their load over the designated area before landing. The logbooks of RAF navigator Fred Shaw recorded that he saw a small, single-engined monoplane spiralling out of control and crashing into the water. But other sources suggest that the are of the drop might have been over the North Sea, away from the planned route of Glenn Miller plane.
