Glenn Miller disappearance

Friendly fire

In 2006 the theory of friendly fire was published by Clarence B. Wolfe, who claims that when he was a gunner in Battery D, 134th AAA Battalion, in Folkestone, England his unit have shot down the plane of Glenn Miller.

 - Friendly fire

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • the weather was rather poor on that day, which could have made the plane identification difficult,
  • it was Canadian plane, still not well known, so the British soldiers could have mistaken the Norseman for German plane.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • in December 1944 Luftwaffe airplanes over England would be a very, very, very rare event - Germans had problems defending their own cities, attacking England was pretty much impossible for them, so the battery would rather not hasty fire on the unknown plane,
  • it was a passenger plane, not even slightly resembling any German bombers or fighters, so it was unlikely to mistake it for a German plane,
  • the plane was flying from England to France and not the other way round, which would make the mistake even more unlikely.
