Glenn Miller disappearance

Bomb hit theory

One of the first theories about the disappearance was that the plane might have been hit by bombs dropped from British bombers that were coming back from aborted mission over Europe. It was a standard procedure that bombers would not try to land while filled with bombs, so if their mission was aborted they would drop their bombs while flying over the English Channel.

 - Bomb hit theory

On December 15 there was such aborted mission on Siegen in Germany. Royal Air Force 138 Lancaster bombers, short on fuel, jettisoned their load over the designated area before landing. The logbooks of RAF navigator Fred Shaw recorded that he saw a small, single-engined monoplane spiralling out of control and crashing into the water. But other sources suggest that the are of the drop might have been over the North Sea, away from the planned route of Glenn Miller plane.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • if report of Fred Shaw is accurate that would fit the general description of plane that Glenn Miller was in,
  • if the route of bombers and UC-64 Norseman did crossed the dropped bombs could have been deadly (either the bombs themselves or the explosions and water splashing in the air),
  • the weather was poor which could have limit the visibility for the plane and the bombers and thus create the dangerous situation.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • there was no distract call reported from the Glenn Miller plane,
  • it is unlikely that Norseman pilot would not be informed to avoid the designated area where bombers could drop their load plus it is unlikely that the designated drop area would be placed close to rather busy during the war routes to Paris,
  • if the navigator have seen the plane below them why the pilots were not informed, so they would not make the drop in this area?
