The murderers
Another theory suggests that there could have been more than one culprit. This theory has some weak points, but is worth considering.
Facts that are supporting the theory:
- it seems unlikely that one person could lure Andreas, his wife, daughter and granddaughter to the barn and kill them one by one - after all the elderly couple could not escape, but why Viktoria and her daughter would not run away?
- the weapon chosen (pickaxe) is not something that could be use easy or fast to kill four people, which would suggest that more than one man would have to be present to prevent the victims from running away,
- the presence of new maid was making the situation for single killer even more complicated, and since the murders took place anyway it suggests that the killer wasn’t alone,
- we can’t be sure if Andreas found footprints left by one person or few people,
Facts that oppose the theory:
- single murderer could have lure the rest of the people only by threaten to harm young Cäzilia (this would stop Viktoria and the grandparents from running away), and thus it isn’t necessary that there were more than one murderer,
- it would be harder for two or more people to hide within the farm,
- if the murders were effect of disturbed mind it would suggest single killer as it is unlikely that two people would have the same mental problem and tendency to kill the same family (unless it was sort of killing spree, but they would not stop at just one family).
