Carbon monoxide poisoning

The theory of carbon monoxide poisoning was started by American author Vincent Gaddis. The carbon monoxide from the faulty boiler system might have caused the poisoning of the whole crew.

Facts that support the theory:

  • the carbon monoxide poisoning can kill people and animals without injuries.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • carbon monoxide is dangerous in closed spaces (like homes), a ship in the sea isn’t a closed space, there is a lot of airflow, not to mention that people on the ship are often outside the closed rooms,
  • carbon monoxide poisoning causes headaches and vomiting, which would warn the crew, and thus they would leave the closed spaces and avoid death,
  • carbon monoxide poisoning is not causing any pain, which means that there would be no explanation for the terrified faces of the crew,
  • carbon monoxide is lighter than air, which means that it is usually building up at the top of the room, on the ship it would be impossible to kill all the people on all the decks with a single leak (unless it would be a huge amount of the gas leaked on all decks),
  • carbon monoxide is flammable, which means that it would start the fire when the concentration was high (and thus kill the crew), not when the concentration was low when the rescue team boarded the ship (after all, they haven’t noticed anything unusual in the air).
