SS Ourang Medan

Distract call

In 1947, while crossing the Strait of Malacca near Indonesia, two American vessels, the City of Baltimore and the Silver Star, received a distract call from ship SS Ourang Medan. The message in Morse code reads "All officers including captain are dead lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead". After that there was a series of incomprehensible signals and then only one last short message from the radio operator: "I die".

Silver Star was first to reach the vessel and rescue team boarded SS Ourang Medan. The ship was found littered with corpses, including the carcass of a dog. The crew of Silver Star described the scene that the bodies were in terrified postures, but without any signs of injuries, with arms outstretched towards the sun

Soon the fire broke out in one of the cargo holds of SS Ourang Medan, forcing the boarding parties to evacuate. Silver Star crew observed the explosion and sinking of the vessels, which made any further investigation impossible.
