Disappearance of PBM-5
When Flight 19 was reported missing several ships and planes were sent to search for the Avengers. Two PBM-5 Mariner flying boats were about to start their training flights, but instead they were diverted to join the search for Flight 19. One of them, PBM-5 with serial number BuNo 59225, took off about 19:25 from Banana River Naval Air Station, few minutes later made standard report to airbase and... was never heard from again. Just like in case of Flight 19 the wreckage of the Marines was never found.
If we connect those two events (disappearance of Flight 19 and PBM-5) on the same day in probably the same area it sounds strange and suspicious, but the disappearance of PBM-5 has a logical explanation - around 21.15 reports of two ships (tanker SS Gaines Mills and escort carrier USS Solomons) could suggest that a mid-air explosion took place in the area. The tanker reported seeing flames and oil on the surface of the sea, while the escort carrier did lost the radar track of a plane at the same time. The mid-air explosion would explain the disappearance of the plane, but the lack of debris make it a little bit suspicious.
