Wreck of Carroll A. Deering

Carroll A. Deering was a five-masted commercial schooner that was found abandoned and run aground off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on 31 January 1921. A lot of elements made the story of Carroll A. Deering similar to famous Mary Celeste case, f.e. all the navigation equipment was gone, so the captain’s log and two lifeboats. There were no signs of violence or struggle, the ship galley looked like the meal for next day was prepared during the abandonment.

But opposite to Mary Celeste the ship was seen just three days before the wreck was found. A lightship near Cape Lookout seen Carroll A. Deering on 28 January 1921. The captain of lightship noticed that red-haired man with foreign accent (most of the crew of Carroll A. Deering were Scandinavians) told him that the ship has lost the anchors. Also captain noticed that crew was wandering around fore deck, where usually they were not allowed.

Lost of the anchors would be the first clue to the face of the ship, but earlier when they stopped for supplies in Barbados even more disturbing events took place. The usual captain of Carroll A. Deering was taken ill and was replaced by W. B. Wormell, a retired captain, who didn’t seem to get along with the crew. On Barbados the first mate was heard to say "I’ll get the captain before we get to Norfolk, I will". He was arrested and later captain Wormell bailed him out of jail.

All of this leads to conclusion that mutiny is the most sensible explanation. Unrest among crew might have led to death of the captain and when captain of lightship noticed the strange behaviour of the crew they might have been the result of mutiny. Also that would explain why there were no signs of the crew after the abandonment - they didn’t want to be recognized since this could lead to federal investigation and imprisonment.

But there are other explanations, like the lost of anchors was truth and the crew had to abandon the ship when they could not avoid running aground (which would be strange that they had time to prepare everything to abandonment). Also it is possible that they all drowned while on the lifeboats if the weather was poor. Nevertheless the fate of the crew was never revealed.
