Bermuda Triangle

Disappearance of USS Cyclops

USS Cyclops was a Proteus-class collier built for the United States Navy in 1910. On 20 February 1918 Cyclops entered Bahia in Brazil and on 22 February left for Baltimore, Maryland carrying the manganese ore. The ship was possibly overloaded and on route the problems with engine started. This caused the ship to make unplanned stop in Barbados. On 4 March Cyclops left Barbados and was expected to arrive in Baltimore on 13 March. The ship was never seen or heard again, no wreck or remains of 309 crewmembers were ever found.

 - Disappearance of USS Cyclops

Heavy storm took place in the area Cyclops was crossing, also the overload and engine problems could have been the factors that caused the "natural" sinking of the ship, but since no trace was found after 4 March it is even unclear if Cyclops was in the area during the storm.

Two other ships of Proteus class were also lost at sea in 1941, also without trace and also near Bermuda Triangle, which led to conclusion that some weak point in construction might have led to breaking up in poor weather, but it was never proved.
