Disappearance of Flight MH 370

Extended suicide theory

Just like the crew escape theory, this one makes sense only with some assumptions, but with lack of evidence cannot be proved or disproved.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • according to some sources Captain Shah had family problems, but were they big enough to consider suicide is unknown,
  • according to some sources analysis of flight simulator from Captain Shah’s computer did contained a scenario with flying on a similar course to the Flight MH 370 (westwards towards Sumatra, along the coast and later due south), which could suggest a "dry run" before the real thing,
  • the point in which the original route was abandoned was very specifically chosen - after leaving the Kuala Lumpur air traffic control area and before entering the Ho Chi Minh City area, which would postpone the search for the plane - this requires a lot of knowledge about the air traffic control procedures, Captain Shah had that knowledge and experience, if he would plan an extended suicide that would be the best way to do it,
  • pilot can cut off communication with outside world for the whole plane,
  • the plane changed the altitude after the change of course, which suggests a planned operation,
  • if the flight path we were shown (due west over Malaysian Peninsula and north west to avoid Sumatra) is correct, it would suggest fully intentional avoidance of being detected,
  • the middle of the Indian Ocean, hundreds of miles away from any land would be the place, where it would be the hardest to find any evidence.

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • the are no evidence that would suggest Captain Shah was suicidal or he had clear reason to want other people to die,
  • change of the altitude and course might also suggest an emergency situation (like decompression of the cabin),
  • even if Captain Shah done it all by himself (changed the course, altitude, switched off communication), he would have to remove second pilot from the cabin, which is not impossible, but still it would give about 7 hours of time to the crew and passengers to at least try to stop him,
  • police checked the background of all crew members, especially Captain Shah, and found no evidence that would suggest extended suicide as the explanation.
