Disappearance of Flight MH 370

Kidnapping theory

The most obvious theory at the beginning of the investigation was kidnapping of the plane, probably by terrorist group.

Facts that are supporting the theory:

  • plane did change the route, according to first theory the plane might have been flying to Iran (plane did have enough fuel to reach Iran),
  • Malaysia has active terrorist groups on their area,
  • China do have problems with the Xinjiang autonomy movements (they organised the knife attacks in Chinese subway), although this would be quite step forward for them from local knife attacks to kidnapping international flight,
  • the kidnapping of the plane would be quite likely, but only including the crew (or at least part of the crew) in the conspiracy (the cockpit is securely closed, so the pilots could not be attacked).

Facts that oppose the theory:

  • there was no distract call or any sign of problems aboard,
  • there was no further contact, and for the kidnappers it would be vital to contact the potential place of landing or to past their list of demands,
  • the change of route and switching off the transponder was made in very specific spot - after leaving the Kuala Lumpur air traffic control area and before entering the Ho Chi Minh City area - this would require a great deal of knowledge from kidnappers, not to mention perfect planning of their moment to take over the plane,
  • the plane was not heading to any potential safe place for the kidnappers (Iran can hardly be called safe for anyone apart from Iranians).
